The Space Where Words Should Be

There is a particular kind of longing
that has nothing to do with touch.

It lives somewhere deeper.
In the place where attention settles.

Because when words find her
something inside her shifts.

Not loudly.
Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough to remind her
that she exists in someone’s mind.
That somewhere between hours and obligations
there is a moment where she is thought of
and deemed worth the breath it takes to say something.

That kind of attention does not feel small.
It feels like being chosen.
And she hates how much that matters.

She hates that a few deliberate words
can quiet the restless edge inside her chest.
That they can warm her
in ways hands cannot reach right now.

But the ache deepens
when attention moves easily through the world.

When words are offered freely.
When laughter and conversation spill outward
without hesitation.

She sees how easily it flows.
How naturally it finds others.
And she tells herself
not to measure worth by the direction attention travels.

Still, something inside her notices
the difference between silence
and abundance.

Because when the words do not come
the space where they should be grows heavy.

Not with anger.
With wondering.
With that quiet ache of hoping
that maybe in the next moment
someone will remember her.

That attention will reach across the distance
not with hands
but with intention.

And pour something into her
the way it sometimes does.

Not because she asked.
But because she was wanted.
