Where Wildflowers Grow

The flowers people choose for their gardens
are given rich soil,
steady water,
gentle hands,
and someone who notices
when their leaves begin to fall.

They are admired,
photographed in full bloom,
protected when storms come.

But the wildflowers…

They bloom just beyond the gardens,
where no one thinks to look.

They push through poor soil,
bend beneath endless wind,
drink whatever rain they can find,
and turn their faces toward a sun
that never promised them an audience.

No gardener kneels beside them.
No one clears the weeds from their roots.
No one pauses long enough to wonder
how something so beautiful
learned to survive so alone.

Still, they bloom.

Not because someone is coming.

Because blooming
is the only language
they have ever known.

Perhaps that is the quietest kind of loneliness.

To spend your whole life
becoming something beautiful,

and wonder
if the only thing separating you
from being cherished

was that no one ever thought
to make room for you
in their garden.
