Almost is Exhausting

She keeps stepping forward with careful hands, as if even the air might bruise.

There is always an offering. A word held out. A gesture folded neatly, like a note passed in class.

It is received with a smile that tilts sideways, turned into laughter, lightened, lifted out of the seriousness she meant for it to carry.

Sometimes a window seems to open. A few careful words pass through. For a moment, it feels as if something real has been let in.

Then the window is slammed shut. The shades pulled tight. A joke is made of what was said.

She is left standing there, holding the weight of it, feeling foolish for believing the care might reach beyond what he takes.

She learns to nod along. To pretend the joke was mutual. To tuck her meaning back into a pocket before it embarrasses them both.

She reaches often. Further than she should. Further than she intended.

Each time believing this will be the moment her intention lands without being turned into something smaller.

But she is gently returned to her place. Not unkindly. Not cruelly. Just accurately.

As if someone is always adjusting the frame to remind her where belonging sits in the picture.

She is never told she is wrong. Only shown she is too much. Too earnest. Too literal. Too hopeful with her words.

So she practices shrinking the weight of things. Practices saying them lightly. Practices pretending less was meant all along.

Still, she keeps trying. Still, she keeps offering.

Because hope is a habit she has never quite broken.

But almost is exhausting.

And somewhere inside the quiet of her chest comes the knowing: she is never going to be what she keeps reaching toward.

So she learns to hold her hands a little closer to herself.
