Nothing Can Be Changed Until It Is Faced

He never said it outright.
He alluded.
Pointed in the direction of something
and expected her to know what it was.

Nothing can be changed
until it is faced.

The words echo,
but she doesn’t understand them.
That is what frightens her.

She searches the space between them,
turning it over again and again,
and finds only one untouched thing.

Their situation.
The shape of it.
The way it was built
to stay unnamed.

But that was his design.
He didn’t want labels.
Didn’t want weight.
Didn’t want anything
that would ask more of him.

He wanted relief.
An outlet.
A place to put what had nowhere else to go.

She was that.

A body that listened.
A mouth that didn’t demand.
A presence that knew
how to be used
without asking to be seen.

She didn’t misunderstand the role.
She lived it.

Now she sits with the echo
of what might have been implied,
unsure if this is even
what he meant at all.

She wonders if she has turned the words
into something heavier than intended,
if the fear is hers alone,
if the meaning was never meant
to reach this far.

She does not know
what changes
when something unnamed
is finally spoken.

Only that the silence,
for all its harm,
is familiar.

And familiarity
has always felt safer
than whatever comes next.
